Summary on Grant Application Form
The choice of actuation systems has a vital effect on the strength, compactness, speed of operation, load carrying capacity and flexibility of advanced machines and robots. Unfortunately present drive systems (usually electric, hydraulic pneumatic), despite their extensive use, seldom achieve these demands due to well known and ill documented drawbacks. To overcome these limitations research has been undertaken into the development of a new family of portable high power/weight and power/volume actuators operating pneumatic principles. This work will provide models of and control for a single, couple (extensor/flexor pair) and a full compliant multi-link arm. With these enhancements a valuable new controllable, high power, compliance regulated actuation system will be produced.
