Summary on Grant Application Form
To investigate a method of simplifying the test of high complexity systems by adapting a multi-valued logic that constrains the transition between logic states. A dual rail coding system, where data is coded in two lines with restricted state transitions, allows for the detection of stuck-at-faults both after chip fabrication as well as during the operational usage of the system.Progress:During the course of the first year, several general problems have been addressed. First the set of rules required to define the behaviour of the fundamental building blocks for this logic, have been determined. Following these rules, two libraries have been constructed; one to contain the very fundamental (fine) building blocks like IFIS-AND, IFIS-OR, IFIS-NOT, IFIS-NOR, IFIS-XOR, ... etc. and the other to contain the more high level building blocks like the IFIS-DELAY, the IFIS-FORK, the IFIS-JOIN, the IFIS-1-bit HALF-ADDER and the IFIS-1-bit FULL ADDER elements. These building blocks have been created and evaluated for two different coding strategies using VHDL design tools and investigated and tested with the help of simulation tools. More complex designs such as chains, multi-bit adders, multipliers, mean calculators and F-I-R filters have been constructed using these modules or building blocks. Through the process of construction of these designs, a set of rules have been drawn to describe the behaviour of the building blocks when they are linked together. Three different coding systems have been identified. Systolic FIR filter designs are being constructed to evaluate the 3 methods.
