Summary on Grant Application Form
This research project is aimed at determining the influence of state of stress on the development of damage and crack growth under static and cyclic loading conditions on Y-titanium aluminide which is a candidate material for advanced industrial gas turbine blade applications. The investigation will involve tests on circumferentially notched bars, having different notch profiles to vary the state of stress in the notch throat, and precracked fracture mechanics specimens. Some tests will be interrupted prior to fracture for metallurgical examination to identify the mechanisms of damage formation and crack propagation. Damage mechanics, fracture mechanics, reference stress and finite element methods will be employed to explain the behaviour. Procedures will be produced for making lifetime predictions of Y-titanium aluminide turbine blades and checked against experiments on model blades to be performed at the EPFL, Switzerland.
