Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme proposed concerns detailed measurements of the turbulent velocity field through a bank of finned tubes. The objectives are to both gain a fundamental understanding of the effects of fin geometry on the turbulent flow and to provide data to assist in the development of numerical prediction codes which are used as design aids for such heat-exchanger geometries. A forward-scatter laser-Doppler anemometer (LDA) will be used to make measurements in the flow between the tubes and an innovative fibre-optic LDA techniques will be employed to measure the velocity in the passages between the fins and down to as close as 0.2 mm to a tube surface. Particular emphasis will be paid to the effect of fin spacing on the turbulent flow field for five fin spacings over a range of sub-critical Reynolds number.
