Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal offers a research and preliminary development path for the exploitation of tomographic imaging using AC magnetic fields in process applications. The key features of such an imaging technique compared with present electrical tomographic methods are that the sensors can be totally external to the process, information on the ferromagnetic content of the mixture can be obtained and the technique can be developed into an inherently dual modality system based on the resistive and ferromagnetic components of the mixture. The aim is to produce an electromagnetic tomography system including sensor, system hardware, a host computer and image reconstruction software based on non-iterative back projection. The system performance will be evaluated with respect to image resolution and speed, sensitivity to resistivity and permeability range and contrast, and distortion resulting from the limitations of the back projection image reconstruction method.Potential future applications include measurement of the distribution of ferrous and nonferrous material in minerals processes and the detection of small cracks in metallic components.
