Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to support a project which links the two leading groups in neutron strain scanning, ourselves and AECL, Canada, who have offered 100 days neutron beam time and supporting resources, worth over 300,000 over a period of three years at their Chalk River reactor whilst the SERC ILL reactor is shut-down for extensive refurbishment due to residual stress related fatigue cracking near welds. We will contribute our unique expertise in fast areas and through surface scanning and positioning hardware to add to their expertise in handling difficult industrial components and materials.Measurements will be made of residual stress distribution in extended components including extruded and drawn rods and rails to test models and procedures for the non-destructive extension to greater depths. Advanced techniques will be developed to make currently difficult measurements through surfaces of peened and surface treated components, and in large-grained textures materials, especially welds. The developments will be directly transferable for use at the ILL for when they restart.
