Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is to convert our SNMS equipment to Imaging SNMS and then use it to study the oxide scales and near-surface areas of commercial materials. We have already shown that Imaging SIMS is a powerful tool for this purpose when used on cross-sectioned specimens (instead of sputtering in from the surface); we now wish to use Imaging SNMS in the same way to obtain quantitative information. The conversion will take approximately one year; the rest of the time will be devoted to materials studies with this equipment which will be used almost entirely for this purpose. We envisage wide use of this technique in the field of surface engineering; in the present work we intend to investigate the relation between the reactive elements distribution (yttrium or cerium) and the oxidation behaviour, in case of a CoNiCrAlY overlay coating, Nimonic 86 and an oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloy, MA754. The other important application will involve the determination of nitrogen concentration profiles and nitride distributions in duplex stainless steels.
