Summary on Grant Application Form
Dendritic polymers functionalised at surface sites by tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units are our targets. We have recently developed versatile routes for the attachment of a wide range of functional groups to TTF, and this new methodology should be applicable to the synthesis of the first TTF dendrimers. A wide range of techniques will be used for characterising the materials produced at each successive generation of dendrimer growth. Particularly important techniques will be: FAB mass spectrometry and elemental analysis, size exclusion chromatography, 'H and 13CNMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy and computer-assisted molecular simulations. Redox-activity will be extensively studied by cyclic voltammetry in combination with IR, UV and ESR spectroscopy.
