Summary on Grant Application Form
A flexible system for testing the digital recording properties of sample high coercivity films will be established. Recording will be performed on a motorised x-y table, and recorded bit patterns will be determined by imaging on an in-house SLM/MFM and using the TEM facility at Glasgow. The structure of recorded bit patterns will be studied for longitudinal and transverse mode contact recording for comparison with existing advanced media models, and the performance of the two modes for ultra high track density recording will be compared. Simulations have indicated that at densities in the region of 10 Gbit/inch2 transverse mode recording may be preferred. A range of films will be studied, including commercial films and high coercivity CoPt films produced in- house. The group has considerable experience in the fabrication of high coercivity films, and simulations of existing films indicate that they will have excellent high density recording properties.
