Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to investigate the precipitation of the mixed microalloyed carbonitrides (Nb,Ti)(C,N),(Nb,V,Ti)(C,N) and AlN and MnS in low-carbon microalloyed steels, during time- temperature exposures between solidification and the start of thermomechanical processing. Small castings will be used in which the cooling rate will simulate that in continuous casting. Specimens will be quenched out from a series of temperatures in the austenitic range to determine when precipitates form initially. Others will be held isothermally after cooling to holding temperatures, to determine events preceding direct hot rolling. Still others will be partially cooled and reheated to simulate hot-charge rolling. Ingots cooled to room temperature will be reheated and held at temperature to simulate conventional controlled rolling. High resolution STEM-EDAX and microdiffraction will be used to investigate compositions and morphologies, and kinetics of precipitation will be determined. The crystallography of co-precipitating particles will be investigated.
