Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is fundamental in its nature. It is directed toward a new and novel approach for inducing the effects of faults such as cracks under dynamic loading into non-faulted structures. Based on the volterra series, it is a form of an inverse problem for non-linear structures whereby a signal will be calculated which, when injected into a vibrating linear structure, will produce on output response of the structure which appears to be that of the structure with an active fault such as a crack opening and closing. The method of injecting the fault relies upon actuating piezo-ceramic materials (or voltage/strain sensitive materials). The techniques could be applied, in a generic way, to the calibration/validation of health and structural integrity monitoring systems under a structure's normal operating conditions.
