Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research programme is focussed on the scientific basis underlying the two major performance issues of durability and liquid tightness of concretes. The primary objective of the work is to extend and develop the application of unsaturated flow theory to the analysis of the capillary movement of water and other liquids into concrete materials. The theoretical work will be supported by a programme of laboratory work which will test the theoretical analyses and provide reference quality data on fundamental hydraulic parameters. The laboratory work will include an assessment of the application of the tomographic techniques of NMR imaging, positron emission tomography and neutron radiography to monitor water content distributions. The feasibility of using measurements of water absorption from drilled holes and surface sources to determine the fundamental capillary absorption property - the sorptiviity - in-situ will be assessed in detail.
