Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is to investigate an aspect of the controllability of nonlinear systems. Controllability analysis has concentrated solely on linear systems but chemical processes exhibit strong nonlinear characteristics. Using an algorithm of Isidori for identifying the zero dynamics of a class of nonlinear systems we will investigate the effect of non-minimum phase behaviour of nonlinear systems, seeking to use theoretical results and simulation to enhance the understanding of this aspect of controllability analysis which is known to be an important source of control problems. The analysis will be applied to an industrial boiler system known to exhibit non-minimum phase behaviour. Simulation studies will assist in developing the physical understanding as well as helping to extend the results to systems which are nonlinear in the control variable.
