Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to measure three-dimensional solids concentration profiles in a stirred slurry mixer, to investigate mixing kinetics, effect of particle size and shape and to quantify homogeneity of mixing. Results will be compared with network of backmixed zones model. The second part of the work will seek to exploit the known frequency dependence response of the two mineral species. Research will be focused on particulate mixtures of known silica-hematite composition. The extent of segregation of the two particulate components in a slurry mixture settling under gravity will be followed first. Then maps of the two solid types will be obtained for steady-state mixing, using a similar procedure to that described above. In this manner it should be possible to measure and visualize the response of individual components in a stirred opaque slurry. This would have significant applications in the design and optimization of mixing and separation processes.
