Summary on Grant Application Form
The accuracy and validity of calculations of force from numerical electromagnetic field solutions for electromagnetic devices cannot at present be assured. It is proposed to assess and compare different methods of force calculation using 2- and 3-dimensional finite-element field solutions. Experimental actuators will be used to provide benchmark experimental force measurements for comparison with computations. A new force calculation algorithm and code will be written employing Coulomb method, for comparison with Maxwell stress and virtual work computations. The effect of parameters such as small airgaps and saturating ferromagnetic material on force and force distribution will be investigated. Conclusions will be drawn on the appropriate application of such computations to the computer-aided design of electromechanical devices.
