Summary on Grant Application Form
To develop radical chain reactions, of importance in organic synthesis, based on novel homolytic addiction reactions of unsaturated molecules. The emphasis will be on C-C bond formulation. Addition to, inter alia, isocyanides, alkylidene ylids, diazoalkanes, vinylic azides, imines and iminium ions will be investigated. Polar effect will be exploited to direct and control homolytic addition.2 To use ESR spectroscopy to study the elementary radical reactions involved in these chain processes and to apply the mechanistic knowledge gained to guide the progression of the preparative work.
