Summary on Grant Application Form |
The calculations proposed involve the application of state-of-the-art theoretical and computational techniques to elucidate the underlying physics of scanning probe microscopies. We shall investigate the forces set up by the short-range interaction between tip and sample which is common to all SPM techniques, and how the interaction affects the local barrier for electron tunnelling between the two. We shall examine the effect of adatoms or modifications to the structure on the tip on Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM) images. We shall also study the contrast between different functional groups in organic molecules in the STM as a function of bias, and study the contribution made by thermally-induced structural defects to electron transport in self-assembled alkyl thiol monolayers. Finally we shall undertake first-principles studies of the surface chemistry of simple hydrocarbons on silicon and relate the results to STM measurements.
