Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is for continuing funding to develop and expand the large research programme in the Manchester Materials Science Centre concerned with the use of Raman Spectroscopy to follow deformation processes in polymers, fibre and composites. The present research programme is in four main areas, Fibre Deformation, Composite Micromechanics, Theory and Isotropic Polymers. It is proposed to introduce at least four new projects into the new programme. These include Silk Fibres, Carbon/Carbon Composites, Fracture Mechanics and Thermoplastic Matrix Composites. In addition funding is requested towards the purchase of a new state-of-the-art Renishaw Raman Microscope Systems which promises up to an order of magnitude improvement in resolution and sensitivity for Raman deformation studies in certain materials. It is anticipated that the use of the new Raman System will allow a significant and important insight into the phenomena such as molecular deformation process in polymer fibres, composite micromechanics and the state of stress around cracks in glassy polymers, to be obtained.
