Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim is to exploit a discovery at Royal Holloway that positronium formation at a graphite surface is sensitively related to the presence and fluidity of physisorbed atoms and molecules. It provides a uniquely sensitive method to study the behaviour of two-dimensional systems absorbed onto the basal place of carbon. Positronium production will be investigated for a range of gases as a function of temperature and pressure with a range of monolayer coverages. The results will be interpreted in connection with two-dimensional clustering, lateral binding of atoms at surface sites, the Ps formation process itself, etc. Of special interest will be the nature and fluidity of some 2-D phases (eg zeta in 02).The use of positronium as an indicator of physisorption on Fullerene surfaces will be explored.
