Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main objectives are 1) to synthesise novel ferroelectric and electroclinic materials based on low molar mass organosiloxanes, 2) to carry out structure property correlations based on physical studies and define molecular design protocols with applications in mind and 3) examine the device potential of these materials. The low molar mass siloxanes will have A*B and A*BA* type structures where A represents the chiral mesogen and B the siloxane moiety. Materials will be synthesised with high and low spontaneous polarisation, low viscosity and controlled tilt angles that are independent of temperature. The project will employ two excellent Research Associates - one for chemical synthesis, the other for physical studies. Both are 1st class graduates of UK universities with considerable experience in the field. Finally, the programme is a joint project between two large and active research groups with physics and chemistry departments.
