Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is to renew the special rolling grant for the LaMBE project - the MBE growth of rare earth superlattices and the supply of well characterised samples to UK research groups. The Balzers MBE UMS630 machine was commissioned 30 months ago and since then in excess of 200 samples have been grown of a number of differences heavy rare earth systems (Dy/Y, Ho/Y, Ho/Lu, Ho/Er & Dy/Ho). These samples have been supplied to UK groups for a variety of measurements (x-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetometry, NMR, magnetoresistance, Raman scattering and photoemission). The results have shown novel and exciting physics resulting in a number of journal publications and invited talks. The samples are of higher structural quality than those produced elsewhere. The programme proposed builds on this success. There are four main thrusts: 1) the continuation of the present programme on heavy rare earths; 2) the development of in-situ RHEED and ex-situ x-ray characterisation to study the MBE growth process in detail; 3) the growth of new materials such as light rare earths, different non-magnetic spacers and 4f/3d superlattices; 4) the development of different capping techniques.
