Summary on Grant Application Form
Following a successful pilot study, we propose to carry out an intensive NMR study of epitaxially grown rare-earth laminae and superlattices. Our exploratory experiments have shown that NMR is a sensitive tool for the investigation of physical phenomena not only in the interior of epitaxial layers but also at the boundaries between them. Our measurements will be supplemented, when appropriate, by magnetometry and by inelastic neutron scattering. Some of the proposed work is on the borderline between pure science and technology and is expected to stimulate new fabrication techniques. The proposed research will be carried out in collaboration with the Oxford LaMBE group, with our colleague Dr P W Mitchell and with Dr P C Riedi at St Andrews, whose NMR spectrometers cover a frequency range complementary to that of ours.
