Summary on Grant Application Form |
A wide range of experiments is proposed for the study of the excitation and ionisation of gas-phase atoms and molecules using electron and photon impact. The overall objectives are:(1) to investigate collision processes; (2) to obtain spectroscopic information;(3) to develop new instruments and techniques.Electron excitation experiments will be performed to examine the rotational levels of excited molecules using a new apparatus, to study short lived negative ion states of atoms and to measure the absolute excitation cross sections of the alkali metal atoms. Ionisation by electron impact will be studied using a novel (e,2e) computer optimised coincidence spectrometer to probe collision dynamics. Forbidden ionic states will be isolated using the technique of ion-threshold electron coincidence spectroscopy. Photo- excitation measurements to doubly-excited states will be undertaken to allow the study of resonant ionisation, one and two step double-photoionisation, post-collision interactions and shake up/down processes. Electron and photon impact of metastable atoms will be used to measure absolute cross sections and to observe forbidden states. Two significant instrument developments are proposed, to construct an ultra-high energy resolution electron monochromator and to develop a spectrometer for double-threshold electron coincidence spectroscopy.
