Summary on Grant Application Form |
In-situ force microscopy will be used to explore the inhibitive effects of precipitated films, deposited on well-defined substrates using reactions that occur during corrosion, with simultaneous electrochemical kinetic information. Such systems include metal hydroxide, oxyhydroxides or basic salts deposited on gold-on-mica substrates, Fe00H layers on Fe and FeCr thin films and gel-like alumina films on sputtered aluminium alloys. The film growth conditions will be controlled by potential and reactant concentration, influencing film morphology and porosity. Early film development and relationship to substrate structure will be examined as well as controlled anion additions to the solution, influencing charge on the precipitated layer and its transport or membrane properties. Lateral spreading and subsequent film thickening studies, with understanding of inherent porosity, will enable testing of electrochemical models of layer growth for the first time.Extension of the previous studies to contact mode AFM with tip modulation and deliberate indentation of porous layers will provide the thrust for measurements of compliance, damage and fracture and semi-quantitative relationships to mechanical properties and transport behaviour of the various film types.
