A time resolved investigation of Rydberg electron motion in small diatomic molecules will be undertaken for the first time. A coherent superposition of Rydberg levels, converging to defined rovibrational levels of the molecular ion core, will be exicted from an intermediate electronically excited state of the neutral molecule, using tunable picosecond laser pulses. The subsequent evolution of the electronic wavepacket will be monitored in real time using a phase-modulated, two-pump pulse excitation scheme and detected using ramped field ionisation. This will create the opportunity to perform a whole series of new experiments to investigate the peculiarly molecular aspects of Rydberg electron dynamics such as the interactions between Rydberg series converging to different ion core levels and rotational and vibrational autoionisation. An investigation of electron dynamics in the internal field of a rotating and vibrating molecular core, and in external electric fields, will lead to an increase in our understanding of the fundamental physics of electron processes in molecules; in addition to its academic value, this will be of benefit to fields such as reaction dynamics in which the ability to control molecular dynamics at the level of quantum mechanics is an exciting prospect.
