Summary on Grant Application Form
A recently formulated Lagragian model, allowing particle dispersion to be computed in fluid carriers which are modelled within a Eulerian framework by means of second-moment turbulence closure, is to be validated and extended to include crossing-trajectory effects, carrier-turbulence modulation and reaction. A key characteristic of the dispersion model, which involves sampling from correlated pdf's, is its ability to take fully into account anisotropy of turbulence and correlation of turbulent fluctuations in time. The model in its current state applies to small, light particles only. Large, heavy particles move along trajectories quite different from that of fluid. This effect and the influence of particle mean and turbulence motion on the carrier fluid are to be included. Both the basic and the extended model variants are to be validated by refernce to a new experimental data obtained by sophisticated phase laser doppler anemometry. The extended model is then to be applied to recirculating isothermal and reacting flows, the latter necessitating the inclusion of an evaporation, reaction rate and heat-transfer models.
