We propose to use expertise in the Centre to build a scanning probe system capable of imaging with a near-field optical fibre tip SNOM) and a hollow ion conductance pipette (SICM) with a lateral resolution of 100 Angstrom. The optical probe, in conjunction with time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy will provide us with a non-contact, chemically specific, high resolution optical technique for microscopy and spectroscopy of biological membranes currently of interest in the Centre as biosensors. The scanning probe will also provide us with the means of nano-patterning our device substrates for multifunctional arrays and interconnects and provide a technique for optical or electrical addressing of future devices.Our aims are to build quickly a versatile near-field microscope and perform significant imaging and spectroscopy of biological membranes to expand our knowledge base for device development. We also intend to demonstrate the applicability of the near-field technique in the key strategic areas of nano-patterning and device addressing which is expected to yield patentable techniques. We have the range of expertise in the Centre to develop the near-field system and fully exploit it in a variety of fundamental and applied projects in the future and establish the Centre internationally in the areas of near-field optics and high resolution bio-imaging.
