Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme is to study adsorption processes and changes of morphology at surfaces, particularly of semiconductors, with atomic or molecular resolution and with temperature as a variable under continuous control between room temperature and 1200C. A variable temperature STM will be used to observe dynamic events including migration, incorporation and reaction, at individual sites and steps on a service. Experiments include adsorption and reaction of hydrocarbons and disilane and germane and electromigration of metals on silicon surfaces and adsorption and reaction of trimethyl gallium and hydrocarbons on GaAs surfaces. Oxidation of urania and the adsorption and behaviour of molecules on its surface will be studied. Throughout the programme there is a commitment to theoretical calculations to understand the structures and contrast that are seen.
