Summary on Grant Application Form |
Isotope substitution neutron scattering data will be taken on aqueous solutions of t-BuoH and THF as functions of temperature and concentration.1. Solute-solute pair distributions will allow the potential of mean force to be extracted, and compared with theory and simulations.2. Solute-water orientational structure will define the hydration shells surrounding the non-polar groups.3. Water-water orientational structure close to non-polar groups will be compared to that in bulk water to test the standard explanation of the hydrophobic interaction.
