Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to synthesise macromolecules, of novel topology, by the formation of a phthalocyanine (Pc) 'core' from the reaction of phthalonitrile containing oligomers. In addition the formation of columnar supramolecular structures, due to the self-association of the functionally important Pc core, will be studied. Specific goals will be: (i) The synthesis of symmetrical Pc-centred dendrimers and poly(ethylene oxide)s (PEOs) of uniform molecular weight (MW). (ii) The synthesis of unsymmetrical Pc-centred copolymers of uniform MW, containing a combination of oligo(ethylene oxide)s, dendritic fragments, long alkyl chains or chiral substituents. (iii) Analysis of the degree of self-association of the Pc core in the pure macromolecule and in aqueous solution. This will be achieved by an investigation of the optical properties (absorption and fluorescence spectra) and the ability of the macromolecule to form columnar liquid crystals.
