Summary on Grant Application Form
Filament wound glass fibre and carbon reinforced epoxy resin tubes will be tested to destruction under tow types of external pressure loading in order to study their buckling and crushing behaviour and strengths. Th tubes will have different winding angles and hence different ratios of strength and stiffness in the circumferential: axial directions. A range of wall thickness will be tested which is expected to give a very wide range of failure pressures including very high pressures up to 200Mpa. The cylinder diameters and lengths will also be varied. A special test rig will be manufactured to carry out the tests. The experimental buckling strengths will be compared with theoretical predictions from simplified closed form analytical solutions and well known thin shell and finite element computer programs. The crushing strengths will be compared with theoretical predictions from laminate and thick cylinder computer programs. Attempts will be made to refine the theory for use in design of composite structures.
