Summary on Grant Application Form |
Liquid crystal displays will be required to be made at very high resolution so that the effect of fringing fields will become very significant. Modelling the effect of these fields on the liquid crystal material will allow improved materials to be specified. This can only be achieved by including all of the relevant physical parameters, such as elastic constants and viscosity. Efficient numerical methods are essential to allow such modelling to be tractable. This project will allow finite elements with adaptive meshes to model a variety of liquid crystal devices, allowing predictions for improved materials in active matrix displays and many other electro-optical elements using liquid crystals. This approach allows great flexibility in the types of structures that can be modelled and will also allow different alignment energies to be included, so giving scope for probing the surface alignment and optimising that alignment. The final program will give a robust, widely usable tool for the development of liquid crystal materials and their application in devices.
