Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research project is a collaborative venture between UMIST and GEC Alsthom Protection and Control, the UK's largest manufacturer of power system protection equipment. The project involves an investigation into whether the satellite-based Global Positioning System can be used for time synchronisation in a differential protection scheme for distribution feeders. If the technique is feasible (an initial investigation was very promising), the principal applicant and a research assistant will design a prototype protection system based on a 486 PC-AT. The prototype system will be tested and imporved using the UMIST and the GEC Alsthom Power System Simulator. The final stage is to design a differential protection relay based on the GEC Alsthom Midos hardware and to evaluate its performance on a simulator and a Midlands Electricity distribution feeder. The culmination of the project will be a detailed assessment of whether the concept is feasible and if the prototype Midos hardware is an acceptable implementation of the design. If the assessment is favourable then, and only then, will confidence be gained that the prototype can be developed into a commercial relay.
