Summary on Grant Application Form
A range of measures and indicators of porosity and permeability have been applied to portland cement concrete. although a considerable body of literature exists on the hydration and conversion of calcium aluminate cements (CAC), there is an apparent lack of detailed information regarding the porosity and permeability of CAC concrete. The proposed research study will focus on the relationship between the various measure of porosity, as applied to CAC systems. The type of pores, their proportion, size distribution, and connectivity will be established through a combination of traditional and more novel techniques. Standard references will be developed to allow information from transmitted light optical microscopy and ultrasonic pulse velocity investigations to be quantitative. Nuclear magnetic resonance will also be employed to provide details of the bonding of water and to produce images of the macropore system. In addition to traditional permeameter measures of permeability, optical and electron microscopy will assist in identifying the presence of microcracking and its influence on permeability. While the results of the research will provide valuable information on the nature of CAC systems, they may also have application to the study of many other types of porous material.
