Summary on Grant Application Form
We intend to collaborate with the British development of technological films for application in industry, specifically by using the Royal Holloway positron beam facility (TACITUS) to characterise the films and to assess the concentrations and roles of defects and their connection with adhesion problems etc. Of particular importance are titanium nitride and diamond -like carbon films on steel and silicon substrates. We shall collaborate with Dr S Bull, (PVD and Ion-Assisted Coatings Section) AEA Technology, Harwell who will supply all the samples. Other nitrides of boron, chromium, silicon, etc will be studied and the work will be extended to promising multilayer structures (e.g. TiC/TiN). This is an area of huge commercial potential if the problems can be overcome.
