This proposal addresses a need for measurement at high spatial resolution of variation of current density in electrochemical systems and for the identification of the local chemistry associated with such variations. The vehicle for the instrument development is the study of localised corrosion, in particular the idea that such corrosion develops as a consequence of the local self-amplification of very small spatial fluctuations in passive current density. The proposal is in two parts. The first part concerns the construction of a new form of scanning electrochemical microscope. The second part is more ambitious and proposes the integration of scanning electrochemical microscopy with scanning near-field optical microscopy, with the possibility of extension to photo-electrochemical imaging at sub-um scales. The aim is the concerted use of these new methods together with scanning laser photoelectrochemical microscopy, STM, SEM/EPMA, scanning Auger microscopy and imaging XPS to detect the spatial variations in current, identify the local chemistry and correlate with local variations of composition, inclusions and topography. The question is why some fluctuations self-amplify whilst others do not.
