An interdisciplinary study is proposed in which the transient non linear response in a rapidly-rotating stratified fluid to an impulsive change in rotation rate is to be investigated theoretically and experimentally, for containers of complex shape. Particular emphasis is to be placed upon cases of industrial importance such as the inverted cone geometry where I) the bounding walls (and the associated boundary layers) of the container are inclined to the vertical and ii) the fluid has spatial variation in depth, in order to determine the role played by the unsteady wall boundary layers in the transient non linear response of the interior fluid to the external forcing. Cases will be considered for which the fractional increase in rotation rate is of order unity or greater, including cases in which the fluid is spun from the rest. Combinations of asymptotic and computational methods will be used in the theoretical analysis to determine I) the transient behaviour of the complex unsteady boundary layers on the bounding surfaces of the fluid and ii) the interior flow adjustment. The theoretical analysis will be accompanied by a coupled set of detailed laboratory experiments in which the time-dependent behaviour of the velocity and density fields within the interior and boundary layers of the fluid will be monitored, visualised and measured by means of sophisticated instrumentation.
