Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application proposes to use traffic data as a forum for exploring the problem of applying neural networks to time varying data. Two functions, short term forecasting and incident detection, of traffic monitoring systems will be examined in detail. Fundamental research will be carried out in the following areas:i. To assess whether periodic retraining of neural networks can overcome the proplem of the networks becoming out of date and for which paradigms this technique is most applicable. ii. To explore dynamic paradigms which allow continuous retraining. iii. To investigate how to deal with unusual situations such as temporarily missing inputs. iv. To explore different methods of incident detection, with particular emphasis on the problem of having to train neural networks with a small amount of data. v. To investigate how a neural network used for incident detection can learn from its mistakes as incidents are either verified or denied. vi. To explore questions of feedback and stability. The project intends to deliver a prototype monitoring system based on neural networks for future commercial exploitation.
