Edge emitting lasers cannot readily generate very stable, high quality beam shapes with low astigmatism. The recent development of vertical cavity lasers has provided a potential means of relieving the inherent astigmatism of edge emitting devices. Being very suitable for flexible coupling to external optical cavities, they promise very high quality beam manipulation, coherent coupling and beam scanning. Within this project external cavities will be used to dominate the optical guiding of the VCSEL laser cavity which will allow (i) the problems associated with the top VCSEL reflector to be overcome (ii) automatic selection of the transverse mode and (iii) spectral registration. The success of this approach will depend on careful optimisation of the VCSEL structures in parallel with external cavity design.More advanced external cavities will be used to provide (i) mode selection to provide output beams of arbitrary beamshape, potentially useful for applications such as optical tweezers (ii) intracavity switched phase control to allow high quality beam scanning (iii) Talbot cavity configurations to achieve strong coherent coupling of VCSEL arrays to achieve high power, high beam quality pumping of optical systems (iv) novel cavity designs to allow high power picosecond pulse generation and optical switching.
