Summary on Grant Application Form
Complex metal oxides are key materials in a wide variety of electronic, magnetic and optical applications. The aim of this project is to synthesise and characterise a new class of oxyfluorides with extended lattices having improved physical properties for such applications. A comprehensive synthesis strategy will target materials with important structural types, eg perovskite, layer perovskite, but containing both 02- and F-. One specific objective will be the tuning of key structural features that delineate the cooperative electronic properties. Late transition metal derivatives are to be specifically investigated with potential of access to a variety of oxidation states and mixed valency. The synthesis program will be supported with a comprehensive investigation of structure and magnetic, optical and electronic properties.
