Summary on Grant Application Form
In this integrated programme advanced methods for measuring full-field IC engine flows will be developed using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). It will build on the success of the recent programme by providing three-dimensional PIV; improved PIV dynamic range using cross-correlation processing with image labelling; PIV as a routine method for fired engine flows; correlation of flame kernel growth with burn period; correlation between the in-cylinder flow field and fuel distirbution using PIV and Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF). The flow measurement techniques are at the leading edge of experimental fluid mechanics and engine diagnostics and will provide important and significant steps foward in the understanding of in-cylinder engine flows and combustion.
