Summary on Grant Application Form |
Synchrotron radiation leads to good quality data in high resolution powder diffraction and structural studies of amorphous systems, but incremental scanning of a detector over a wide angular range is time-consuming, and samples are necessarily limited to steady state conditions. In recent tests using a CURVED IMAGE-PLATE DETECTOR we demonstrated data acquisition times are reducible by factors of up to 100, with no loss in data quality. Clearly there is potential for facilitating higher throughput (hence giving better value for both industrial AND research council users) and when fully developed such a system would open up new possibilities in studies of structural changes as a function of changing conditions and of small samples. This would be of particular importance in the exploitation of the SRS for new materials development. We therefore propose to construct both stationary and translating cameras for a curved image-plate system on station 9.1, develop associated analysis software, and perform demonstration experiments under both ambient conditions and varying temperature.
