Summary on Grant Application Form
A research programme is proposed which combines mutually supportive investigations of LES and RANS methodologies for separated high-Re-number flows that are expected to be strongly influenced by organised periodic motion. The programme, partially funded by DRA and BAe (SRC), involves fundamental investigations of sub-grid-scale modelling, near-wall modelling, numerical verification and validation. The developed strategy is to be applied to a number of complex high-Re-flows which involve organised motion arising from separation, either at sharp corners or along continuous surfaces. Special emphasis is placed on resolving flows which are pertinent to external aerodynamics. The programme is closely associated with that undertaken within the EPSRC-funded LESUK (Cray T3D) Consortium, which is coordinated by the first-named applicant. A consequence of this linkage is that the substantial computational resources needed to support the proposed work are already in place, additional costs arising only in relation to local computing. The programme is also linked, technically, to the Type 2 CEC BRITE-EURAM proposal Flow Physics Modelling for Industry to be submitted to the European Commission in March 1995.
