Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research addresses the need to dynamically adapt multimedia applications to a range of network types (ie high-speed, low-speed, mobile) offering various and fluctuating levels of quality of service. The approach will be to provide QoS-managed bindings to mask QoS fluctuations from applications wherever possible and to appropriately inform applications when such fluctuations are impossible to mask. QoS-managed bindings will be internally structured in terms of adaptive agents at each system level which encapsulate layer specific policies to adapt to QoS fluctuations. The design will be implemented in an existing real-time microkernel environment developed under EPSRC grant GR/J16541 extended with a CORBA based API. The design will be tested and evaluated through the implementation of a MIME based multimedia email application and a videoconferencing application which, together, will provide a representative range of traffic types. The partners are Lancaster University and BT Labs. The rle of BT Labs will be to fund a CASE PhD studentship associated with the project, to engage in regular project meetings with the Lancaster researchers and to aid in the exploitation and dissemination of the results of the research.
