Experimentally the simplest conductor is a sheet of two-dimensional (2D) electrons over the surface of superfluid helium (surface state electrons). These nondegenerate electrons can have higher mobilities than in any solid state conductor. This is also a prime example of a strongly interacting system: unscreened Coulomb forces can dominate the properties, as in the formation of a 2D crystal (the Wigner crystal) at low temperatures. The aim is to understand the fundamental properties of interacting 2D electrons in both the fluid and solid phases, at low temperatures and in a magnetic field, where the extreme quantum limit for the quantisation of cyclotron orbits is easily reached. Measurements of the magnetoconductivity and other properties will be made to study many-electron effects in the conductivity, the 2D Wigner crystal and 2D electrons in confined geometries. The experiments use unique structured electrodes and devices recently developed using microfabrication techniques. Controlled periodic and random 1D and 2D potentials will be used to study classicial and quantum magnetoconduction in thin channels, conduction and pinning in tailor-made electron crystals and glasses and ballistic transport phenomena. This research forms a major part of a European collaboration with strong links to other international groups.
