Summary on Grant Application Form |
Sensing of metal ions of environmental concern will be investigated using electrochemically-controlled reactions on optical waveguides. The measurement of ion concentrations will be achieved by elecro-assisted ionic extraction in sensing films containing chromophoric ligands. Multiple sensors for referencing and for determination of multiple analytes will be integrated on a single chip and interrogated using electrochemical techniques. Planar waveguide technology is ideal for sensor integration but such multisensors combined with powerful electrochemical techniques have not yet been demonstrated. The aim of this research is to realise novel electrochemically reversible sensors which are specific to individual metal ions, several of which are integrated and readily addressed on a single ship, and which allow continuous monitoring of toxic hazards in waste and drinking waters.
