Summary on Grant Application Form
The approach taken is to find an evolutionary path from 2nd to 3rd generation mobile systems using Time Division based Multi-access and Multiplexing protocols to map logical Traffic and Control Channels at the air interface. A case study approach will be used starting with the simulation of models for existing Second Generation (SG) systems then adapting these to meet future requirements for Traffic and Control Channels. This will be done by using features already existing in SG systems, such as GSM (Voice Activity Detection, Half Rate Coding etc). The outcome of this first stage will be an Enhanced SG system protocol which maximises the utilization of existing mobile network infrastructures. Finally, the experience gained will lead to a second stage of developing new methods of mapping logical channels to physical channels for Third Generation PCNs.
