Summary on Grant Application Form
A series of charged luminescent chiral terbium complexes will be prepared and characterised by solution methods of analysis. Complexes with two pairs of differing (or the same) aryl antennae will be examined by chiroptical methods and time-resolved luminescence studies. The distance between the chiral organic chromophore and the bound ion will be varied and stereoselectivity in energy transfer and / or absorption will be sought. The antenna will be either built in to the structure of the complex or may be non-covalently bound by selective inclusion. The perturbation of the terbium emission as a function of added anions (including chiral ions), chiral bio-molecules and the intrinsic chirality of the complex will be examined.
