The main theme of this research programme will be the study of the role of isospin in nuclear collective structure. This will involve a steadily increasing use of radioactive beam facilities as they become available throughout the period of the grant. The development of techniques and facilities to optimise the use of this major new opportunity in nuclear physics will constitute a parallel technical goal of the programme. The experimental programme will focus on the N=Z line, with special emphasis on odd-odd nuclei where the specific effects attributable to the neutron-proton exchange symmetry are most transparent. A parallel programme of theoretical research will be undertaken to apply, where possible, the shell model and, where not, the isospin invariant version of the Interacting Boson Model, to the nuclei in the N=Z=2850 shell. The applicability of dynamical symmetries incorporating isospin will also be considered. Studies of nuclear high spin phenomena centred on band termination will also be undertaken to answer some of the remaining questions outstanding in this area.`
