Most industrial flames have a region of partial premixing and the stability of combustion in this region is crucial, particularly in situations where they are susceptible to self excited acoustic oscillations. The overall objective of this proposal is to clarify the mechanisms of combustion in partially premixed flames, and to cast the results in a form which can be used in describing industrial burner processes.The programme is a combination of experiments on a novel configuration for studying lifted flames in a controlled manner, together with direct numerical simulations of lifted flames with realistic chemistry which will be developed from a well-tested code for compressible turbulent flow with zero heat release. The results will be developed in the form of correlations between key parameters and flame stabilisation and of numerically generated statisitics against which combustion models can be tuned.
